ABSTRACT

We experienced a case with symptoms ranging between greater yang and lesser yang disease after fluid administration. A 62-year-old woman complained of abdominal fullness, systemic feebleness, dull headache and buzzing in the ear. As she had the symptoms of greater yang disease such as chillness, fever and headache, and those of lesser yang disease such as vertigo, bitter taste in the mouth, thirst and fullness beneath the heart, she was diagnosed as having the complication of greater yang and lesser yang disease. As a result, fluid administration was stopped and Shirei-to was administered. The following was found; eliminated systemic feebleness, restored appetite, improved fullness beneath the heart and loss of body weight. Saikokeishi-to was effective for nausea and sense of epigastric pressure. The patient recovered her vitality sufficiently to travel. For cold and pain of legs and loins, Toki-shigyaku-ka-goshuyu-shokyo-to was effective. Fluid administration is usually for alimentation and the treatment of dehydration, however, it should be indicated with caution for common cold syndrome.

ABSTRACT

A case of subphrenic abscess after Hassab's operation successfully treated with the Kampo formula Shimbu-to is reported. A 43-year-old woman who had been suffering from cirrhosis of the liver and pancytopenia received an operation. Ten days following the operation, she developed a fever. The condition was diagnosed as postsplenectomic sepsis and steroid hormones were given. On day 35 following surgery, a subphrenic abscess was detected by CT scan and echography. The abscess was drained using echography, and several types of antibiotics given, however, these therapies were not effective. After administration of the Kampo formula Shimbu-to, the subphrenic abscess decreased.<br>Shimbu-to proved effective in the treatment of a subphrenic abscess that did not respond to Western medical drainage and antibiotic treatment methods.

ABSTRACT

A study of the relationship between nutritional status and Kyo/Jitsu score in patients with gastrointestinal disease was carried out. The authors used the Otake Kyo/Jitsu assessment score. Cancer patients showed a greater decrease from their ideal body weight than did noncancer patients. Significant Pearson coefficients were calculated for the Kyo/Jitsu assessment score, muscle strength (r=0.6), ideal body weight (r=0.29) and serum albumin (r=0.27). It was concluded that the Kyo/Jitsu assessment score was useful in the nutritional assessment of patients with gastrointestinal disease.
